The Tortoise and the Hare

A swift hare loved to boast: “No one in the wood can beat me!”

“Then race me,” said the tortoise quietly. The hare laughed so hard his ears shook.

The fox marked out the course. “Ready, steady… go!” she called, and raised her tail.

Away flew the hare. The tortoise followed, one quiet step after another.

Soon the hare looked back. The tortoise was only a speck, far, far behind.

“I have plenty of time for a nap,” yawned the hare. He curled up beneath the old oak.

Along came the tortoise. Past the sleeping hare he went, never stopping, never hurrying.

Step by step, the tortoise reached the meadow. The finish lay just ahead.

At last the hare awoke. The path was empty, and away he sprang toward the meadow!

But the tortoise was already near the finish. The watching fox held her breath.

The tortoise crossed first. The hare arrived one heartbeat later, and he bowed.

“Slow and steady wins the race,” said the hare. Under the quiet moon, the three friends walked home together.
